A new online venture caters to women who like sex toys, but hate sorting through walls of 10-inch, purple vein-covered dildos with pictures of porn stars on the packages.
“There's plenty of variety out there. The problem we feel is what that variety looks like,” said the site's founder, Jimmy Stagg.
Stagg and his business partner Tim Diacon, a fellow designer, got the idea for the site after talking about sex toys with their girlfriends one night over dinner. From there, they got together a group of testers, all women between the ages of 21 and 45 with a range of different body types and sexual experiences.
“It was clear from our initial research that the vast majority of traditional toys actually turn women off, and secondly, that no mass-produced toy could ever fit perfectly with any one person's anatomy, preferences and desires.”
Madetopleasure.com lets users design their own sex toys online. First you pick a from a list of six templates, and from there, tweak it to your preference, changing the length, width and shape and adding or removing bumps and curves.
If you're not sure about the size, the site will let you compare your design to everyday objects such as a tube of lipstick, a toothbrush or the old classic, a banana.
When you're done, you choose your finish — either clear, silver or gold, though the last two options will kick your bill up a few hundred bucks.
If your custom toy still isn't custom enough, you can get a VIP consultation service, where you can work with a design team to get it just right.
“Stone settings, inscriptions, special materials are all possible," Stagg said. "Consultations do (cost a) premium though, so it's not for everyone.”
Another way the toys are different from the usual fare is that they don't vibrate.
"There is also an obsession with vibrators in the traditional market and again, from our team of trusty testers, we found that internal vibration is, in the majority of cases, unwanted or even uncomfortable,” Stagg said.
But if you like some good vibrations, there's no need to worry, as each purchase comes with the free gift of a vibrating bullet — much better than anything you'd get out of a cereal box.
