Manuel Moto, 46, creative director of high-end wedding and evening wear label Pronovias died in an apparent suicide, reports say.
A police source told AFP the death was “violent” but not a homicide and that the investigation was closed.
Spanish newspaper El Pais says the designer’s remains were found near his home in Sitges, near Barcelona, on Tuesday but news of his death was not released until Wednesday. El Pais reports that Moto left three suicide notes, one for his boyfriend, one for his family and one for the police, which said that he had been suffering from depression.
Moto had been with Pronovias for 23 years, helping to take the Spanish brand from a family business to a luxe wedding gown label known the world over.
Victoria’s Secret supermodel Doutzen Kroes wore a dress by Moto at her 2010 wedding, as did Rod Stewart’s wife, Penny Lancaster at their 2007 nuptials. Supermodels Karolina Kurkova, Miranda Kerr, Irina Shayk and Bar Rafaeli have all walked the runway in the label’s shows. Famed Lebanese designer Elie Saab created a capsule 2013 collection for the label.
"The Pronovias Family has lost one of their most beloved members. The memory of his collections, his shows, his hard work, his talent and his passion will remain with us forever. Manuel was a great man, a great colleague, a great artist and, above all, a great person,” said Alberto Palatchi, President of Pronovias Fashion Group in a release.
“At this difficult time, I would like to express on behalf of the entire team our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones. We will never forget him.”
Pronovias.com re-vamped their homepage, with a picture of Moto and the words “Always in our hearts” over an invitation for users to send their messages.
