For those hot, sticky summer days when you don’t even want to get dressed, a maxi dress just might save the day. After you take two seconds to throw it on, you can rest easy in the knowledge that your super-glamorous outfit for the day will also be loose, breathable and comfy.
The best part? “For different body types, there really is a maxi dress for everybody,” says Toronto stylist Talia Brown (herself a lover of the maxi).
The only thought you’ll have to put in is a careful eye toward styling. Because the shape of a maxi is so heavy and attention-grabbing, Brown says, everything else needs to get out of the way.
“With maxis, you have to show some skin on your feet, because you’re already covered up. I think a delicate sandal or a ballet flat - if you wanted to wear a heel, you should probably do something like a one-strap - nothing fancy.”
As for jewelry, Brown says, long necklaces that go with the shape of the dress are best; in addition to going with the flowy, boho vibe of the dress, they’re also elongating. A simple bangle also works.
Top things off with a cropped blazer, jacket or cardigan - something that hits higher on the waist, so you don’t look sloppy. And, if you’re looking to shield yourself from the sun, “it’s perfect for a really sunny day with a sun hat. There’s just a charm about it.”
