The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer, and we’re ditching dark colours in favour of brights, florals and neons. Why shouldn’t your denim follow suit?

“I think that people should start treating white denim the same way they treat their blue jeans,” says Toronto stylist Talia Brown. “It’s very chic to wear white, day or night.”

Vancouver stylist Nadia Albano, too, is a fan of the “crisp, clean” look: “For me, it’s the epitome of summer.”

Indeed, white jeans instantly conjure an image of warm-weather chic - say, Jackie Onassis on vacation or off-duty celebs in Hollywood.

That beachy, resort-ish connotation will lend a casual air to your outfit, no matter where you wear it, Brown adds. “Even if you wear it at dinner, it has a different charm to it.”

Maybe it’s for that reason that white denim traditionally gets paired with light, beachy fabrics: Albano advises lightweight, flowy fabrics like linen, cotton and silk. “White jeans are great for travelling as they can be mixed and matched with any wardrobe,” she adds. To really drive the glamorous vacation vibe home, our stylists suggest, go white-on-white-on-white.

As for cut, it’s up to you: Skinny or straight-cut denim are a safe way to test the waters, but boyfriend jeans and cutoffs run with that summery, relaxed vibe. (Albano also digs the retro-cool look of wide-legs and flares.)

Whatever the look you’re after, “never buy it too tight,” says Brown, adding a thicker denim works best. “You don’t want a see-through white - you want it to be very matte.”
