Start your engines. This fall, the well-dressed are heading out on the highway in motorcycle jackets.
The perennial favourite of bikers, rockers and off-duty models, the cropped, asymmetric-zipped cut is everywhere you turn this season, showing up in stores in countless colours, fabrics and styles.
“I think anyone can put on a motorcycle jacket and they all of a sudden feel cool,” says Toronto-based stylist Talia Brown. “It’s like a confidence piece.”
No matter your body type or style, it’s easy to harness that confidence, Brown says: “I think it’s just a very flattering cut, and I think it’s a coat you can find cut for every body type. There’s a variety of cuts and lengths, so I think everyone can find one that suits them just so.”
The key to that fit, she adds, is the length. “You want to make sure it fits at the line somewhere above your bum, but underneath your hip, so it doesn’t cut you off in a weird area and add volume,” she says, adding you can also opt for a more cropped model. “I think the way the waist fits is what really makes it. Most of them fit just above the hipbone.”
The classic motorcycle jacket is, obviously, leather (after all, you’ll need a tough protective layer in case you crash your bike). Not only is it warm and windproof, Brown says, “it gets better with age. You can have a four-year leather coat that’s just broken in enough and you’re starting to fall in love with. It may be because of the shine, but your eyes are also drawn to it. It’s a rich fabric.” (Faux-leather will also give you that look at a lower price point.)
But this fall, the motorcycle cut is showing up in wools, knits and tweeds. “They’ve even started cutting raincoats to look like motorcycle jackets,” Brown adds.
The fabric versions make for an unexpected way to add just enough edge to a polished look. But if the rocker look is your jam, Brown says, you may want to stick with leather over fabric. “It makes you look a little more responsible, not so playful.”
