Anne Hathaway’s blush Prada Oscars gown left fashion media and fans underwhelmed Sunday night and its chilly reception didn’t get past the Best Supporting Actress winner. In a statement released by her publicist to fashion publication Women’s Wear Daily, Hathaway apologized for the fashion faux pas.

"It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans.

"Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused."

Hathaway has worn Valentino gowns to numerous red carpet events - including the 2011 Oscars - and donned a custom made blush bridal gown by the Italian fashion house for her 2012 wedding. The actress is known to have a close relationship with Valentino Garavani and was spotted skiing with him and husband Adam Shulman in Switzerland in early January.

The light Prada gown, which landed Hathaway on several worst dressed lists, was less dramatic than her usual whimsical style, with straight lines and an open back. Darting over the bosom had onlookers believing the actress exposed her nipples, causing a stir on social media and spawning the Twitter account @HathawayNipple.

Hathaway’s publicist, Stephen Huvane, also represents Jennifer Aniston who wore a red Valentino gown on the big night (a colour Hathaway is often spotted wearing). Fashion blog site fashionista.com reported that the reason for the last minute swap was that Hathaway's "Les Miserables” co-star Amanda Seyfried’s Alexander McQueen gown was too similar to her own.
