Carlton Brown shakes up menswear
By Lacy Atalick, Special to SUN MEDIA

Jamaican designer Carlton Brown's debut North American show shook up crowds in one of the most energetic runway performances at Toronto fashion week.

The menswear designer had his own music mix created by fellow Jamaican reggae artist Sean Paul especially for the show, with Paul giving shout-outs to Brown.

The dance music had the crowd under tent at Nathan Phillips Square stoked, and even warranted one of the two standing ovations at the event.

The Caribbean-influenced clothing line was so well cut and detailed with hot pink, lime green and turquoise.

One of the pieces, what Brown called "a quatre jack," is what the name suggests. It's a jacket which only covers one arm, shoulder and one side of the upper chest. It stays in place with a two strings that are tied on the opposite side of the body.

The few women in the show wore their lingerie outside of their dress shirts.

Jamaican-born Canadian-raised supermodel Stacey McKenzie led the charge of models up the runway.

Feminine-coloured dress shirts with ruffles running along side the buttons were popular among the audience, but not as popular as the male model who paraded the runway wearing no shirt at all.

He said he felt special by the way his collection was received by Canada.

"I'm humbled by that, with hard work, getting great results, you must be happy," Brown said.

He said he wanted to bring the Caribbean here to Canada.

"Coming here for fall collection, that's why you see lots of different colours and fabrics that come out of the Caribbean," Brown said.

His theme, winner's gold, which celebrates Jamaica's performance in the last Olympics, was shown with gold trim along suits and shirts.

LG Fashion Week, which is celebrating it's 10th anniversary, closes today with shows from Project Runway designers Carlie Wong, Lucian Matis and Evan Biddell.
