When it comes to love and dating, there’s a lot of talk about finding “The One” - that one special person that you’re meant to be with. In fact, Hollywood has made billions churning out an endless number of romantic comedies about finding one’s true love. However, because life isn’t a John Hughes movie and your partner isn’t suddenly going to appear beneath your bedroom window touting a boombox, here are 10 honest, heartwarming, real life ways to know that you’ve found “the one.”

1. You feel at home

Talk to someone who is happily in love and many will tell you that they immediately felt at home with their partner. Whether you’re trekking through the Himalayas or watching a marathon of Orange is the New Black in your pajamas, it’s the feeling of being able to exhale when you’re with them. As Maren from Victoria, B. C. Says, “I didn't believe in "the one" before I met my husband, but I had a gut feeling that I was exactly where I was meant to be.”

2. They make you laugh

It sounds simplistic, but if you’re going to be with someone forever, they better make you laugh - preferably until your face hurts. As Chantelle from Toronto explains, she knew she’d met her match when it came to her husband’s sense of humour. “He could always make me laugh, no matter how terrible the situation was. Getting each other's ridiculous and sometimes dark humour is key.”

3. You’ve weathered tough times together

Kimberley has been with her partner for 14 years and explains, “When my mom was diagnosed with cancer I realized that the funny, handsome guy was also the super committed and supportive guy.” If you can support each other through the worst of times together, you know that your significant other is in it for the long haul.

4. They do that one thing that makes your day infinitely better

When asked when she knew her husband was “the one,” Julia from Toronto says, “He makes the coffee. It sounds like a little thing, but seriously -the best part of my morning is because of him! 5 years later and I am still excited every day I get to the kitchen and there is a cup waiting for me.”

5. You stand a little taller when they’re around

As Tanya from Stouffville explains, she knew her husband was “the one” because of how safe she felt when she was with him. “He always knows what to say to make the situation better and still makes me feel like I am the most beautiful woman in the world!” she says. Ada from Vancouver has been with her high school sweetheart for 16 years and says you know it’s true love when “you find that person who makes you better than you could ever be, by yourself. It's also that person who you can talk to for hours about anything without worrying about being judged.”

6. You love them unconditionally: inside and out

Should their gorgeous exterior disappear, you know that you would love them no less. As Natacha from the Yukon explains about her life partner, “I had not realized someone existed who was already exactly the way I wanted them to be, and already treated me the way I wanted to be treated, no changing of either of us to fit required.”

7. You want to grow old with them

Call it the “front porch” analogy. If you can envision you and your partner white haired, sitting together in matching lounge chairs, like you’re staring in your very own Cialis commercial and it makes you smile, you’ve found “the one.”

8. Their gross stuff doesn’t gross you out

From their dirty sweat socks, to certain less than appealing bodily functions, if their gross stuff makes you laugh, instead of cringe, you’ve likely got a keeper.

9. You both want the same things

Tom from Toronto recently married his wife Anna. He says that he knew he’d found “the one” when very early in the relationship they were able to talk about their future together. “Realizing that we were on the same page, and that I could just be frank, and not worry about putting on some kind of act or acting aloof or whatever was just so wonderfully freeing, I can't even tell you.” he says.

10. You know they are “your person”

Love is all about following your intuition. There’s something to be said about “just knowing” that you’re meant to be with someone. As Natacha explains, “It's hard to put words to true love as it is to explain faith.”

Love notes

Love Again, a dating website aimed at men and women over 40, surveyed 2,000 Canadians and found that, despite high divorce rates and modern-day relationship challenges, the majority of its users still believe in true love.

74% of women and 87% of men surveyed reported that regardless of previous relationship setbacks, they still believe the perfect partner is out there for them.

Now for the real “warm and fuzzy” stat: 79% of men and women believe true love lasts forever.
