If you’ve noticed your love life heating up, as the temperatures drop you’re not alone.

According to a new study published on the popular blog The Psychology of Human Sexuality, men want more sex during the winter. In this new study, 114 men were asked to rate the attractiveness of several women, over the course of the year. Scientists found that men were more aroused by revealing photos of women during the colder months than they were during the summer.

Every three months, men were asked to rate two sets of photos. The first set showed only the women’s faces, whereas the second included images of their bodies in revealing clothing. The researchers found that men’s facial attraction didn’t change throughout the year, however their attraction to women’s bodies did. They reported noticeably increased levels of arousal from December to February. Men who were in relationships, also reported a spike in attraction to their partners during the winter.

Dr. Lehmiller, a Harvard University psychologist, commented that “The research gives us reason to suspect that the weather isn't the only thing that changes with the seasons.”

If you’ve ever experienced a Canadian winter, this may come as surprise. Walk down any street in January and you’ll likely find throngs of people trekking through snow and slush, wrapped in body obscuring parkas - in other words, it’s not exactly the sexiest time of year. Although Canadian winter isn’t the hedonistic xanadu that many of wish it was, this might actually work in our favour.

The weather is frightful outside and there’s less to do, which prompts many couples to stay in and have sex. Humans also have a tendency to desire what is not readily available. In winter, skin is often hidden, making it that much more desirable. Neal Slateford, co-founder of the popular online sex boutique Lovehoney, reports that this is their busiest time of year. “Couples clearly want to stay in and spice up their fun.”

This could also explain why whenever I wear a bulky parka to the mall, there are always several guys who ask “Can I get fries with that shake?” and whether I’d be willing to “back that thing up!” I always thought my local mall was just a hot bed for sexual harassment when really, it might just be biology at play.

However, what about women? Although I haven’t found any data to support it, I’d argue that women want sex just as much as men during the winter. It’s cold out there and what many of us crave is a little human contact. Keep that in mind next time a woman approaches you in January. Yes, you in the body obscuring parka.
