First impressions matter - especially when it comes to dating. According to a recent study by Match.com, 81% of Canadian singles say personal style is important on the first date.

As a single woman, I can definitely attest that what your date wears and how he presents himself on the first date is crucial to determining whether there will be a second date. I once went on a date with a man who worked in the same office building. When I arrived at the meeting spot, I barely recognized him. Gone was his usual suit and tie - my date was wearing a pair of dirty, baggy jeans and a large black hoodie that he had pulled tightly around his face. He was so unrecognizable that he might as well have been wearing a balaclava. This guy didn't look ready for a date; he looked ready to rob a convenience store. Needless to say, the date did not go well.

As much as we try to deny it, image and appearance matters. To help you put your best foot forward, here are a few wardrobe tips for the first date:

Dress at least as well or better than when you met her. If you met her in a jeans and t-shirt, swap that tee for a nice button-down shirt for your date. Women notice when guys make the effort to step things up a notch. Showing her that you think she’s worth dressing up for will definitely score you points.

Be comfortable. If you’re a casual guy, don’t feel like you have to show up for your date in a three-piece suit. You want to feel comfortable and confident, not like you’re wearing a costume or heading to a funeral.

Be polished. Casual doesn’t mean sloppy. Make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle free. Brush your hair and teeth, shave if necessary and pay attention to your footwear. Nothing kills a great outfit like bad grooming or a pair of shoes that has seen better days.

Ignore trends. Yes, that guy in the music video looked great wearing sunglasses at night and sure, some guys can pull off a diamond-studded grill. This does not mean you should attempt either of these looks. Women like men with authentic personal style, even if that’s just a band tee and a pair of jeans.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to being yourself. Own your sense of personal style and keep it polished.

Just know that under no circumstances are socks and sandals ever OK.
