Would it be fair to say that in most fiction stories, stepmothers are portrayed as evil and wicked? A number of fairy tales, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and the Irish folk tale, The Children of Lir, feature a malevolent stepmother who preys on her stepdaughter(s). It comes as no surprise that today’s society typecasts stepmothers as cruel before they even step into their new role.
With Mother’s Day around the corner, this is society’s opportunity to acknowledge biological mothers and stepmothers alike for their contributions. Cut stepmothers some slack; put yourself in their position and think how challenging it is for them to even try and fill your mother’s shoes.
Even though every situation is unique and has its complications, here are some tips to help you step up and share the love this Mother’s Day:
Forgive and forget!
As hard as it sounds, try to make the situation work as it is, even if it’s only for the day. This Mother’s Day, while you may still be thanking your mother for her efforts over the last year, even the smallest gesture towards your stepmother will not go unnoticed.
Total eclipse of the heart!
Even though you might want to keep the roles of your mother and your stepmother separate, under certain circumstances, some may choose to share the day with both maternal figures in their lives. Remember that by acknowledging both, you are not taking away from their individual influences.
Make the moves!
As awkward as it may feel for you to include your mum and your step mum, your step mum may be feeling even more anxious about her role in the festivities. If you can, reach out to her and make her feel appreciated for the care she gives you.
Step up to the plate!
Your step mum is probably feeling weighed down with emotions in the run up to Mother’s Day. Take a load off her shoulders by whipping up a gourmet dinner to enjoy with her.
Whomever and however you decide to celebrate, keep an open mind and lead the way to a gracious and giving Mother’s Day.
