Sometimes, it can be lonely being a mom.

Many women feel isolated when they are suddenly at home with a baby in arms and their friends are at work.

"When you become a mom, everything changes and the need to connect with other moms ... it becomes a priority," Meg Gerriston of Hull, Mass., said in a phone interview.

That's why friends Gerriston, Julia High and Christa Terry started MomMeetMom.com – a dating website-like spot where moms and fill out a survey to find other moms with compatible interests in their area.

It was officially launched in January in the U.S. and has now come north of the border.

The website is "empowering mothers to stay social" while home with their children and beyond, Gerriston said.

When scheduling around naps and bedtime routines, "You want someone who is literally right down the road from you."

"Moms across the world are craving a service like this," Gerriston said.

It is not just for new moms, though – mothers of any age and with children of any age are welcome to sign up to meet other moms in their area.

After registering for the free site, new members are asked a number of questions about themselves, their family and how far away you'd be willing to travel to meet other moms.

People can say whether they are looking for anything from "casual playdaters" or "best friend material." Moms can also indicate certain concerns that are important to them, like autism, childhood diabetes, or living with children who have food allergies.

A mother who has a child with a peanut allergy may want to be matched with other moms in similar situations to ensure safe playdates, Gerriston said.

While Canadian moms are just starting to get on the site, Gerriston said it is growing quickly. And while being somewhat secretive, she added there is a new feature launching in a few weeks that is "going to take the experience to an entirely new level."
