You’re injured and your psyche is taking a beating; well, it may be tough to slow down when speed is on your mind, but going without will provide great returns and results.

The road to recovery from a sports injury can be fraught with psychological and emotional potholes, agree experts.

“All age groups and skill levels can experience psychological distress associated with injury and the subsequent disruption in their training regime, competition schedule or self-identity,” says Dr. Dave Simon, of Carleton University Sports Medicine Clinic in Ottawa.

Patience and positive thinking, as well as setting realistic and attainable goals, are critical factors to recovering both physically and mentally, says the orthopaedic surgeon.

“Sport is a lifestyle and it is forever if you are smart and allow your body to heal,” adds Canadian high-performance athlete Lisa Bentley.
