 Employees who use treadmills at their workstations not only receive physical benefits, but are also more productive, a U.S. study has found.

As part of the study by researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington, the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota, 200 employees at a non-profit were given treadmill desks. Over the course of a year, employees could chose to sit, stand or walk at their discretion. They all wore an accelerometer that kept track of how many calories they burned daily.

The average employee burned 74 more calories per day than they did before getting the treadmill workstation, the study found.

"Employees who had the treadmill workstations became more productive in addition to becoming more active," researcher Darla Hamann said in a release. "Walking on the treadmill didn't come at the expense of being a productive worker. Walking seemed to augment productivity."

The study was recently published in the journal PLOS One.
