Capturing the perfect colour for your decorating or design ideas isn't always easy, but a new tool is being manufactured which could change that.

The concept of the SwatchMate Cube has been causing excitement in the design world for some time, but thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, it is now in the final design stages and should be ready to ship by June 2014.

The Cube lets users "grab" any colour under the sun, thanks to an inner sphere which features a light source and a colour sensor. Once the colour has been recorded, the colour data can be sent either to a smartphone or transferred directly into Photoshop, via a Bluetooth connection.

Thanks to an accompanying app, the colour can then be matched to paint brands, helping decorators find their perfect shade. The Cube can also be used to help artists and creative colour grade photos.

"We were tired of not being able to interact with beautiful colours from the world around us," say Melbourne-based co-founders of SwatchMate Paul Peng, Djordje Dikic and Rocky Liang on the brand's website. "So we set out to design a simple and accurate way to capture moments of colour inspiration."

The Cube won several awards when it was unveiled last year, including the 2013 Melbourne and Sydney Design Awards. On the back of this success, the group launched their Kickstarter campaign which had almost doubled its target by the end of December 2013, reaching about US$90,000.

A final prototype of the Cube is currently being finalized before the group embarks upon its initial production run. The product starts at around $80 and is available for purchase at Indiegogo.com.
