A new U.S. study says it "confirms definitely" that drinking diet beverages helps people lose weight.

In a 12-week study involving 303 people, researchers from the University of Colorado and Temple University in Philadelphia looked at the effects of water and diet drinks on weight loss.

The subjects who drank diet beverages lost an average of 13 lbs., 44% more than the control group participants who drank only water and lost 9 lbs. on average.

More than half of the participants in the diet beverage group (64%) lost at least 5% of their body weight.

Both groups, which otherwise followed the same diet and exercise regimen, saw reductions in the size of their waists and lower blood pressure.

The study says those who drank the diet beverages reported feeling less hungry and showed greater improvements in their serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein, or "bad" cholesterol.

The researchers noted the American Beverage Association supported the study with an unrestricted educational grant.
