TORONTO -- Darwin the Ikea monkey has made it onto an elite list.

He has been named one of the top fashion icons of 2012 by The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom.

Also making the list were pop star Rihanna, fashion designers Uma Wang, Iris Apfel, Hedi Slimane and Paris Vogue editor-in-chief Emmanuelle Alt.

"Darwin, the monkey who wandered into a Canadian branch of Ikea in a very smart sheepskin coat, instantly stealing the crown for most fashionable pet," the newspaper wrote.

Canadian fashion guru Jeanne Beker said Darwin "went out on a limb" with his fashion statement.

"We need some levity right now. It was a fashionable moment and goes to show you what a statement fashion makes. If he was naked, we wouldn't be talking about him," Beker said. "Best-dressed lists are antiquated, so it is a sign of the times that a monkey made the list."
