Escaping the February fat trap

It’s not over until the fat lady sings, but your resolution to lose weight dwindles if you stop exercising in February.

I realized I had fallen off my own workout goals when I asked my co-worker if she wanted anything from Tim Hortons. She glanced at my waistline and responded: “I’m suddenly craving a muffin top.”

“Mid-February is the time of year that most people forget about their fitness resolutions. I call it the February fat trap,” says Moses “The Eagle” James, a former Olympian and world boxing champion turned president of Eagle Xtreme Fitness (eaglextremefitness.com).

“Laziness is not the problem. The culprit is boredom. If you find yourself unmotivated and bored with your workout — you need to find innovative ways to make it fun again,” he says.

If you’ve found yourself nodding off from your own fitness goals only two months into 2012 — perhaps it’s time to hop back into action with some new workout gear.

Here are some fitness gadgets to get your regimen back on track.

GETTING A JUMP START

Moses “The Eagle” James recommends bouncing back into the groove with Kangoo Jumps, a contraption comparable to a ski boot with springy rubber soles.

“Rebounding with Kangoo Jumps provides a quick and easy aerobic effect to the body, especially the heart,” says James as he bounces in the boots. “Our base metabolic rate will become increasingly more efficient, resulting in noticeable improvements in our muscle tone, and weight management.

“The boots also reduce the stress on joints, compared to running, by up to 80%. They provide the very best protection to your hips, lower back, knees, and ankles.”

The workout: My knees and ankles remain skeptical, so James challenges me to a test jump. I easily strap into the boots as if I were putting on rollerblades.

We instantly hop to it as James leads me through some aerobics with an assortment of kicks and dance moves. All this jumping around would usually put my legs in a house of pain — but my joints don’t feel a thing with the boots on.

Next is a quick jog around the block and it feels like I’m striding leaps and bounds past other runners. However, stopping and standing in the boots takes some practice at first. In fact, it can be a real trip.

The verdict: Kangoo Jumps may be a bit costly but they are fun enough to jumpstart your boring workout regimen and help you rebound from the February fat trap.

STAYING ON TRACK

The SLIMCOACH is a device that senses, tracks and analyzes your movements in real time. One press of a button on the tiny gadget, which looks like a pedometer, and you’ll get an instant status report on your daily health goals.

You can also plug your SLIMCOACH into your computer and view your weekly and yearly progress. It is endorsed by The Biggest Loser reality series, which outfitted contestants with the device.

MyTrak seems subtler than MyWife — who reminds me to stay on top of my fitness goals by purposely buying me clothes that are too small for me. She calls the smaller sizes: “Inspiration.”

FITNESS FASHION

These shorts use one’s natural body movement to gently massage the skin. This action stimulates drainage of fluids and toxins that build up under the surface skin – which causes the dimpling effect of cellulite.

Worn under everyday clothing, it is like having thousands of micro-massage workers nimbly shiatsu-ing your backside.
