You can’t deny it any longer – the Holiday season is upon us. The store shelves are stocked with Christmas décor and you’ll undoubtedly find yourself humming along to Frosty the Snowman as you shop for new decorations.
I know it doesn’t make sense to shop for all new decorations but who can resist adding a few items to the arsenal of glittery adornments you have in store for the festive season?
Before we get to the latest and greatest for the season; let me say first that your holiday décor should match the room’s décor. Christmas decorations should simply enhance our existing design. Christmas decoration are not meant to compete with what is already there.
Back in the day when my mom was in charge and I was simply the hanger of ornaments, all Christmas décor was either red, green and silver regardless of the room’s colour palette. Thank goodness those days are behind us. Today, when it comes to designing festive décor we have lots of colourful options.
Let me give you a couple of examples of modern colour schemes. Many of us have taupe rooms, accented with rich chocolate brown or black. This is the perfect neutral space so if you are looking for some glamour in your holiday décor think about a royal purple and copper.
If you desire something more traditional to add sizzle to your green space, try royal blue and silver or chocolate brown and gold. In brown rooms - try lime green and platinum.
What’s hot this year in festive wear? Feathers. They are everywhere this Christmas. You could even pull out the old boa from your closet and use it instead of garland to weave amongst some cedar bough on top of the fireplace mantel.
Can’t stand the thought of discarding or not using your old ornaments? Then recycle them. If you want to recycle your old hanging ornaments, spray paint them or cover them with glue and glitter. There are fabulous glitters available at your favorite craft store and spray paint can be found in seasonal hues - silver, champagne, gold and copper. This is some glamorous décor so don’t be afraid to glitz it up.
Love the country look? Santa does as well. Look for lots of antler and reindeer décor crafted in modern silver or au natural, it’s traditional with a modern twist. Au natural is always in but belongs in the right setting.

Bottom line, work with your home’s colour scheme and look to add ‘festivity’ by adding seasonal motifs, organic textures and lots of glitz.
