A gangsta vegan blog that recently received the ringing endorsement of Gwyneth Paltrow for presenting recipes with gratuitous but amusingly placed expletives has been named the best new blog in Saveur's annual Best Food Blog Awards.
Though the blog only launched last August, the mystery writer behind Thug Kitchen has succeeded in attracting a cult following, with 115,000 Facebook likes and 15,005 Twitter followers -- even though the blogger follows no one.
The appeal? Instead of preaching the virtues of eating healthily by parroting information everyone already knows, the blog introduces recipes like sweet potatoes and pinto bean tacos in the language of a tough, street-talking linguistically creative gangster thug.
"These cornvelopes of flavor got sweet potatoes which pack a F***ton of potassium," for instance.
Sugar snap peas with peanut dipping sauce are described as "high fiber f***ers," a snack that's got "your goddam back."
Meanwhile, during a promotional appearance on the US daytime TV program the "Rachael Ray Show," where Gwyneth Paltrow was peddling her latest cookbook, the healthy eating crusader gave Thug Kitchen a shoutout, calling it "brilliant."
Tens of thousands of food blogs were submitted in the fourth edition of Saveur magazine's annual Best Food Blog Awards across a dozen categories. Editors whittled that down to 68 finalists.
The Best Cooking Blog award, meanwhile, went to Not Without Salt, written by a former pastry chef who worked at Wolfgang Puck's Beverly Hills outpost of Spago restaurant and now a mother of three in Washington State.
While flour and butter play the blog's "main characters," the blog also includes main courses, sides, and gluten-free recipe ideas.
Other major winners include perennial favorite Joy the Baker in the category of desserts and The Sprouted Kitchen for Best Original Recipes.
