Celebrate Caesar!


The Celebration Caesar is the ideal way to honour Canada and its national drink, complete with a garnish that does a good job of looking like the Canadian flag. (Courtesy of Mott's Clamato)

2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the Caesar as Canada's national drink, and Mott's Clamato is hoping you'll celebrate. You can even sign a petition here to make it official. Below, find unique, delicious and innovative recipes for how to get your Caesar going.

CELEBRATION CAESAR

2 oz Canadian whisky

1 dash hot sauce

2 dashes aromatic bitters

6 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

6 fresh sage leaves

Preparation: Rim double rocks glass with freshly ground salt and pepper. Place sage leaves in bottom of glass, add aromatic bitters and fill with ice. Add whisky, hot sauce and Mott’s Clamato cocktail, and pour mixture back and forth 3 or 4 times using another glass, to release the flavour of the sage. Garnish with a skewer of two cherry tomatoes with a pearl onion, to resemble the Canadian flag, adding a fresh sage leaf for colour.

GLASS: Double rocks rimmed with freshly ground salt and pepper

TIP: While celery is traditionally the Caesar garnish of choice, make a Caesar that’s uniquely your own by getting creative. Impress your guests by using citrus fruits or veggies, shrimp or pepperoni sticks, hot peppers or spicy beans – anything goes!

CAESAR SANGRITA

1 oz mezcal (100% de Agave preferred)

2 dashes hot sauce

2 dashes freshly cracked sea salt

1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim glass with freshly cracked sea salt and top with ice. Pour all ingredients in order listed into the glass and stir well. Garnish with an orange twist and wedge.

GLASS: Hurricane rimmed with freshly cracked sea salt

TIP: While vodka is traditionally used when making Caesars, the great taste of Mott’s Clamato cocktail goes well with most any spirit. Surprise your guests and mix things up by using gin, tequila, or rum in your Caesar!

CANADA D’EH CAESAR

1 oz Amaro Montenegro Liqueur

2 dashes hot sauce

3 dashes each freshly ground salt and pepper

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

Juice of one lime wedge, squeezed

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in all ingredients. Stir well and garnish with an orange rind twist.

GLASS: Highball

GARNISH: Orange rind twist

Responsible Hosting Tip: Serve drinks yourself or appoint a reliable friend as bartender – guests tend to drink more when it’s a self-serve bar. And remember, measurement is a must.

CLASSIC CAESAR

1 oz vodka

2 dashes hot sauce

3 dashes freshly ground salt and pepper

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim a glass with lime and Mott’s* Clamato Rimmer*. Fill glass with ice, add all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Dress with fresh celery and lime wedge.

GLASS: Highball rimmed with Mott’s Clamato Rimmer

GARNISH: Celery stick and lime wedge

COAST TO COAST CAESAR

2 oz India Pale Ale

1-2 dashes hot sauce

5 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original Ready-to-Drink Caesar

Preparation: Fill a 12 oz beer glass or mug with ice. Add Mott’s Clamato Original Ready-to-Drink Caesar and hot sauce, then top with India Pale Ale. Garnish with a pepperoni stick and lime wheel.

GLASS: Beer Glass or Mug

GARNISH: Pepperoni stick and lime wheel

TIP: The Mott’s Clamato Caesar is such a versatile cocktail, not only can you make it using a variety of spirits, but you can also use mixes like beer or freshly squeezed orange juice. Experiment with a variety of spices, hot sauces and garnishes to make your Caesar uniquely your own.

CUCUMBER INFUSED CAESAR

1 oz Hendrick’s gin

2 dashes hot sauce

3 dashes freshly ground salt and pepper

4 cucumber sticks (skinned, 4” long)

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Muddle all ingredients except for Mott’s Clamato cocktail and ice in a mixing glass. Then add Mott’s Clamato cocktail and ice and mix thoroughly. Strain mixture into a rimmed footed pilsner glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a cucumber stick seasoned with freshly ground salt and pepper.

TIP: ‘Muddling’ is a simple mashing technique used to release flavours from certain ingredients like herbs or fruit. You can use a wooden muddler or a bar spoon with a muddler on the end.

FIESTA CAESAR

1½ oz gold tequila

6 dashes hot sauce

Juice of one lemon wedge, squeezed

6 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim glass with lemon and coarse sea salt. Fill glass with ice, add all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Garnish with a lemon wheel and a spicy pickled green bean. Notch the bean to hang off the rim for height.

GLASS: Poco Grande (Stemmed Tulip Glass) rimmed with coarse sea salt

Did you know? Mott’s Clamato cocktail not only makes great Caesars but can be used as a cooking ingredient. It can be used as a marinade for meats, or substituted for vegetable juice in dips, soups or sauces.

FIREWORKS CAESAR

1½ oz cachaca or silver tequila

½ fresh clove of garlic

½ fresh green onion (hollow stem portion)

½ fresh jalapeño pepper (add seeds for additional heat)

2 dashes each freshly ground salt and pepper

1 dash hot sauce, to taste

6 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim glass with freshly ground salt and pepper. Mince garlic, green onion and jalapeño pepper and drop into glass. Add dashes of salt and pepper and muddle lightly. Top with ice and add cachaca and Mott’s Clamato cocktail. Mix thoroughly. Garnish with chives and a red hot chili pepper.

TIP: The May long weekend is the unofficial start to the summer Caesar season. To spice up your Caesar recipe, substitute Mott’s Clamato Extra Spicy cocktail. For even more flavour, use Mott’s Clamato the Works* (with horseradish).

HOLIDAY CAESAR PUNCH

1 bottle (1.89 L) of Mott’s* Clamato The Works* cocktail

500 mL vodka

2 limes

2 lemons

Preparation: Pour Mott’s Clamato The Works cocktail and vodka into a large punch bowl without ice. Slice lemons and limes into thin wheels to float on top for added citrus flavour. Keep some fresh ice in a separate bowl so guests can add as much to their Caesar as desired. Pre-rim glasses with Mott’s* Clamato Rimmer* and cut some fresh celery or cucumber sticks for garnish.

TIP: At your next gathering, save time by pre-mixing your Caesar cocktails in a pitcher or punch bowl and refrigerate ahead of time. Pre-rim the glasses and prepare your garnishes so you’re ready to serve when your guests arrive.

HOT PICKLED CAESAR

1 oz vodka

2 dashes hot sauce

3 pinches Mott’s* Clamato Rimmer*

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

1/4 tsp. extra hot horseradish

2 tsp. pickle juice

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim the glass with lime and Mott’s Clamato Rimmer. Fill glass with ice, add all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Garnish with a dill pickle spear and lemon twist.

GLASS: Mug rimmed with Mott’s Clamato Rimmer

TIP: Glassware suggestions are just that – suggestions! Being creative with your glassware will make your Caesar unique and make a great impression on your guests.

LA FÊTE CÉSAR

2 oz vodka, chilled over ice in a shaker

5 drops good quality Balsamic vinegar

1 drop tamari sauce or soy sauce

4 oz Mott’s* Clamato* Original cocktail

Preparation: Rim glass with lime wedge and Mott’s* Clamato Rimmer*. Fill glass with ice and add vodka, Balsamic vinegar and tamari sauce. Fill with Mott’s Clamato cocktail. Garnish with a slice of cucumber bordered with oregano.

VINTAGE CAESAR

2 oz Pinot Grigio

½ oz gin

2 dashes hot sauce

2 dashes each freshly ground salt and pepper

Preparation: Pour all ingredients into a large wine glass filled two thirds with ice. Add freshly ground salt and pepper. Garnish with a skewer of honeydew melon balls seasoned with freshly ground salt and pepper.
