Food - the new Internet porn
Couple runs website that glamourizes gluttonous food
By THANE BURNETT, SUN MEDIA

The 30,000 Calorie Sandwich: A coronary waiting to happen, this sandwich is filled with ground beef, bacon, corn dogs, ham, pastrami, roast beef, bratwurst, braunschweiger and turkey, then topped with fried mushrooms, onion rings, swiss, provolone, cheddar, feta, parmesan cheeses, lettuce and butter on a loaf of white bread. Can't cure the common cold.

We haven't found a way to get the average suburban family in a quality flying automobile.

And that paperless society hasn't exactly worked out for us yet.

But the Western World has nailed it when it comes to inventing tasty food that'll kill us. And as much as we love eating monster triple burgers and super-sized helpings of poutine loaded down with pepperoni and spaghetti sauce, we apparently also adore looking at pictures of meals which are to die for.

Recently, a couple in New York created a blog and website devoted to pictures of over-the-top, horrendously bad for you food. Deep fried cupcakes? Check. Snapshots of a 30,000 calorie sandwich? That's on their menu. Chocolate covered bacon? Bring it on little piggies.

The couple named their site thisiswhyyourefat.com, and in just three days of going online, it attracted more than 3 million page hits. If views were bites, the world suddenly gained five pounds.

Their catchy catch-phrase for the site is: "Where dreams become heart attacks."

"We were used to seeing wonderfully gross food pictures on the web....food porn is very popular," one of the site creators tells Sun Media, of entire websites developed to showcase, not recipes, but just the alluring presentation of gluttonous meals.

Among fans, such sites are seen as a backlash to the push for healthy choices.

The pair at thisiswhyyourefat.com have stopped counting the number of pictures they've gotten of poutine.

"We started it, because we noticed a trend, but while it started as a joke...in every joke, there's some truth. These foods really are why our society is so fat," the creator adds.

She and her boyfriend don't want to be identified — preferring to keep the focus on the food. But they already have a new literary agent and talks with a television network or two.

The first photo they posted, was a picture of 'baconnaise' — all the goodness of bacon with the zip of mayonnaise. Since then, there are almost 2,000 other shots, sent in by people who see something more in a can of pork brains in milk gravy than just 3500 mg. of cholesterol. But if we are what we eat, then maybe we should lay off "The Sandwich of Knowledge." Pictured on the site, stomach churning description points out: "The bottom tier contains eight strips of bacon, six sausages and four burger paddies; followed by a second tier of black pudding, topped by a third tier comprised of two diced chicken breasts and six fried eggs."

Forget another day fighting the common cold. We're not going to survive breakfast.
