LOVAS woman working to play hard

A LOVAS by Wesley Badanjak piece shown during Toronto fashion week on October 19, 2010. (STAN BEHAL/QMI Agency)

At the LOVAS by Wesley Badanjak spring-summer 2011 collection, the designer clearly did what he does best - taking classic inspiration, in this case, from '70s, '80s and '90s party and office wear, and updating them with modern touches and fine tailoring.

Cocktails dresses in neon hues managed to do away with fluorescence for fabulousness, though the dropped waists and boxy Mod cuts may be hard for anyone other than a petite party girl to pull off.

Badanjak mixed glamourous fabrics like sequins, leather and chiffon in largely black and grey basics accented with fuchsia, lemon and lime zing.

Slick trousers, which were topped with bright sequinned tank tops and amply ruffled blouses, stood out for their perfectly straight cuts as future staples in any woman's wardrobe. Gingham made an appearance as well, in dresses, skirts, jackets and even shorts.

A sharp-shouldered suit with a tight waist and pencil skirt was updated with mermaid pleating and a sheen over the slate grey wool, while exposed zippers modernized an '80s-styled one-shoulder black mini dress.

The LOVAS woman is intent on getting noticed for her modern style with an edge, whether she is heading a boardroom meeting in a full-skirted suit or sipping the latest trendy cocktail at a supper club in a ruffled pink mini-dress.

Like the La Roux music played throughout the show, the collection, which could have seemed dated, came off as cutting edge and fierce.
