It may not be a surprise that a Victoria’s Secret model video has gone viral, but it’s not for what you may think (hint: there are no sexy lingerie shots involved). The video has more than 1.3 million hits.
25-year-old international supermodel Cameron Russell has a more poignant message: Our culture is obsessed with looks and we shouldn’t be. We should care about more important societal issues. She spoke at TEDx MidAtlantic in October where share-worthy ideas are typically discussed.
“Usually TED only invites the most accomplished and famous people in the world to give talks,” wrote Russell in an article published by CNN. “The most important part of my job is to show up with a 23-inch waist, looking young, feminine and white. I hoped telling a simple story -- where my only qualification was life experience (not a degree, award, successful business or book) -- could encourage those of us who make media to elevate other personal narratives: the stories of someone like Trayvon Martin, the undocumented worker, the candidate without money for press.”
“I won a genetic lottery,” she added.
Besides Victoria’s Secret, Russell has modeled for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Benetton.
