It’s back-to-school time and, like most parents, you want to send your kid off smartly dressed and equipped to learn. But before you go dressing your little ones in an adorable outfit and loading their backpack with stylish school supplies, take a moment to ensure everything you’re packing is both age appropriate and independent.

This is especially important for primary aged children, says Kerri Wynia, a full-day kindergarten teacher with the Peel District School Board.

“It’s important to remember that with young kids, things are best kept simple and size appropriate,” says Wynia, who points out that something like a giant binder will probably take up the entire desk of a Grade 1 student, leaving little room for anything else.

On the flip side, Wynia says items that foster student independence, such as Velcro shoes and backpacks that they can open and close themselves, can help young students become increasingly self-sufficient.

“I love kindergarten because everything is so exciting for them,” says Wynia, who is entering her ninth year teaching. “There are so many firsts when working with 4 and 5 year olds, and it’s so special to be the first person to introduce them to how wonderful school is.”

With that in mind, Wynia offers the following teacher-approved picks for parents who have little ones who have just started school for the first time.
